La prima Triennale del dopoguerra, la VIII Triennale, si apre nella primavera del 1947, e si pone naturalmente in antitesi politica e culturale con l'edizione precedente. Al centro si pone perciò la costruzione del quartiere sperimentale QT8 (Quartiere Triennale 8a), impostato su basi politiche democratiche e su premesse tecniche e progettuali rigorosamente moderne.Vero e proprio manifesto ideologico dell'epoca, il quartiere raduna in una imponente impresa collettiva un'intera generazione di progettisti. A vario titolo partecipano, tra i molti, Giancarlo De Carlo, Pietro Lingeri, Vico Magistretti, Angelo Mangiarotti, Gino Pollini, Gio Ponti, Ernesto N.Rogers, Maurizio Sacripanti, Ettore Sottsass, Vittoriano Viganò, Marco Zanuso e il paesaggista Pietro Porcinai. Il tema dell'abitazione è svolto con ricchezza di argomenti e di contributi, riprendendo in termini operativi il dibattito avviato dalle nuove associazioni degli architetti sorte dopo la fine della guerra. L'intera mostra è quindi concepita a coronamento del QT8, presentato con un'ampia documentazione, ed è interamente centrata sulle questioni dell'edilizia popolare e del quartiere residenziale moderno. La compattezza ideologica e tematica della VIII Triennale, l'edizione "proletaria", propone un modello espositivo che, nel corso degli anni Cinquanta, è completamente abbandonato. La frantumazione del quadro politico e l'apertura alle esperienze internazionali introducono altri temi e altri interessi, ma il principale fattore di novità è la confluenza delle arti decorative nel vasto ambito, ben più potente e aggressivo, del disegno industriale. Da questo momento il primato politico dell'architettura, regina delle arti durante il fascismo, deve cedere il passo al design che, nel campo delle arti applicate, rappresenta direttamente il soggetto dominante: il mondo della produzione industriale.

The first edition held after WWII, the 8th Triennale, opens in the spring of 1947 and is quite obviously politically and culturally antagonistic to the last pre-war edition. As such, the construction of the experimental neighborhood QT8 (Quartiere Triennale 8a), a cluster of buildings with a democratic spirit and whose technical and engineering principles are rigorously modern.
The experimental neighborhood QT8 and the affirmation of the industrial product a true ideological manifesto for the time, the building block brings together in a massive collective joint-venture a whole generation of designers. Giancarlo De Carlo, Pietro Lingeri, Vico Magistretti, Angelo Mangiarotti, Gino Pollini, Gio Ponti, Ernesto N. Rogers, Maurizio Sacripanti, Ettore Sottsass, Vittoriano Viganò, Marco Zanuso and landscape artist Pietro Porcinai are some of the artists who variously lend their contribution, among many others. The theme of the living space features a host of topics and works, addressing the debate stirred by new associations of architects that flocked after the end of the war from an operational perspective. The entire exhibition is therefore conceived as the crowning ceremony of QT8, supported by a wide range of documents and whose focus is all on issues of residential building and the modern neighborhood. The ideological and thematic compactness of the 8th Triennale, the edition of the “working class”, proposes an expository model that is later, in the 50’s all but abandoned. The disintegration of the political framework and openness to the international experience carry with them other themes and interests, but the main novelty is the convergence of the decorative arts into the vaster and much more powerful and aggressive realm of industrial design. From here on, the political supremacy of architecture, the queen of the arts during the regime, passes the baton to design which directly represents the predominant subject in the field of applied arts: the world of industrial manufacture.
