L'esposizione del 1996 è affidata a un commissario unico, l'architetto Pietro Derossi. Il tema generale è Identità e differenze, in cui i mutamenti dello scenario internazionale sono presi in esame in relazione al rapporto tra cultura locale e interesse globale. Viene realizzata all’esterno Una Piazza per la Triennale e un percorso con totem urbani tra Piazzale Luigi Cadorna e il Palazzo dell’Arte. La complessa impostazione filosofica impegna i partecipanti su tematiche talvolta impervie, e sia nella mostra introduttiva che tra le numerose partecipazioni straniere si rilevano allestimenti di grande interesse. Per esempio, sono senz'altro da ricordare l'allestimento di Ben Van Berkel per la sezione olandese, curata da Ole Bouman, e la ricchezza di contributi progettuali e critici presentati nella sezione giapponese, con la partecipazione di architetti come Kengo Kuma e Kazuyo Sejima. La mostra trova i propri momenti migliori nella presenza, vasta e qualificata, dei protagonisti della cultura progettuale. Nella sezione introduttiva quattro architetti, Peter Eisenman, Hodgetts & Fung, Jean Nouvel e Juan Navarro Baldeweg, sono chiamati a riflettere sul tema generale dell'esposizione lavorando in coppia con altrettanti narratori.
Identities and Differences
The task of organizing the edition in 1996 is entrusted to a sole commissioner Pietro Derossi. The main theme is Identity and differences, where the changing international scene is examined in connection to the relationship between local culture and global interests. Outdoor is established A Square for the Triennale and a route with urban totems between Piazzale Luigi Cadorna and the Palazzo dell’Arte. The articulate philosophical arrangement compels participants to grapple with themes that are at times perilous, and both the introductory exhibition and the countless foreign delegations contribute set-ups of great interest. For instance, we cannot forget to mention the installation of Ben Van Berkel for the Dutch stand, curated by Ole Bouman, and the richness of designer and critical contributions presented in the Japanese stand, with the involvement of architects such as Kengo Kuma and Kazuyo Sejima
The exhibition has its best moments by far in the vast and qualified presence of key players of designer culture. In the introductory section, four architects: Peter Eisenman, Hodgetts & Fung, Jean Nouvel and Juan Navarro Baldeweg, are called upon to reflect on the exhibition’s main theme, working in pairs with narrators.
