- La Memoria e il Futuro
Nel 2001 il Consiglio di Amministrazione della Fondazione La Triennale di Milano decide la trasformazione dell’expo Triennale in un evento di durata di tre anni. Con la trasformazione in una "Triennale dei tre anni" le mostre si susseguono con altrettante inaugurazioni e durate e questo nuovo modello esige un tema unico e unificante che, benché ampio, non sia né astratto, né occasionale, né superfluo. Il tema/titolo della Triennale 2001–2004 è la memoria e il futuro: se da un lato la storia si scrive (e si vive) sempre per il presente che si va facendo futuro, dall’altro si può attribuire anche (e spesso soprattutto) al rifiuto o alla caduta della memoria, quella che da varie parti si definisce la carenza di progettualità concreta e realistica, ma anche propositiva e lungimirante. Questa edizione, che non prevede la presenza di partecipazioni straniere, dura tre anni. Vengono proposte diciassette mostre tematiche che uniscono approfondimenti storici di documentazione sul passato ad attività progettuali proiettate verso il futuro. In questo periodo vengono inoltre poste le basi per l’istituzione del Museo del Design.
Memory and the Future
In 2001, the Board of Directors of Fondazione La Triennale di Milano decides to transform the Triennale expo in an event that spans the whole three years. By transforming the event into a “three-year Triennale”, the exhibitions succeed one after the other with just as many openings and lengths, and this new model demands a unified and unifying theme which, though broad in scope, is neither abstract, nor random, nor useless. The theme/title of the Triennale 2001-2004 is Memory and the future, if on one hand, history is written (and experienced) always as a present-time that gradually becomes the future, on the other, that which is popularly defined as a lack of concrete and realistic, but also proactive and farsighted, design can also be attributed to (and is more often than not) a refusal or downfall of memory.
This edition, with no foreign participation, runs for three years. Seventeen thematic exhibitions are proposed that develop the overall theme from different angles, combining historical focuses on the past with design projects that look to the future. In this period, the foundations are also laid for the establishment of the Design Museum.
